a series of three posters

700mm x 1000mm

The brief was to create a series of posters for a theoretical season of Shakespeare plays at the Barbican Theatre for a university project.

We were restricted to only the use of the Univers typeface and we had to produce the poster in a style departed from the Barbican branding and without the use of any of their current logos.

I wanted to create a piece of work where the process was inherent in the final design, experimenting with the idea of viewing a play with a willing suspension of disbelief.

I decided to take the type and physically suspend it in different planes, echoing the setup of props on a stage. The type was attached to thick board, hung with thin sewing thread and then the whole scene was photographed from the side, revealing the depth and the process.

This created the base for all three posters. For each play, the same poster is printed and the other plays are screen printed over with a slightly translucent ink, revealing the other dates in the season without them taking away from the main show.
